Fall Basics: The Blanket Scarf

Fall Basics - The Blanket Scarf

Fall Basics – The Blanket Scarf

As humorous as it is to call all these highly repeated fall activities “basic,” there is a reason why you see every blogger/basic girl headed to the pumpkin patch with her Hunters on, Starbucks in hand and blanket scarf wrapped around them. They’re freaking functional! Cooler weather is creeping in more each day along with wet weather and shorter days so a fall basic makes them not only more enjoyable but also more fun! My biggest fall basic right now is the blanket scarf!

#1 Reason Why You Need A Blanket Scarf – it is a blanket you can wear!

Us perpetually cold people unite!  A fashion trend we can get behind, being warm.  Even in mild California, Pennsylvania Alicia is still dethawing.  So a blanket – er i mean scarf- is my best accessory when cold.  You can bundle all up in it, drape it over your shoulder or lap, belt it as a cape/shawl/ruana/poncho for a sweater top layer look.  Either way you’ll be warm.

This fall I’m absolutely loving the mark. Blanket Check Scarf.  It is reversible print features a black/brown/white plaid and a black and white herringbone on the other.  The colors are the perfect fall accents to go with pretty much whatever you are wearing.  I already have a holiday plaid one so this one is a nice addition.  PLUS it is like 2 scarfs in one with the duo prints.  The quality is really great especially for only $26!

What To Wear: Black Friday Shopping

What To Wear: Black Friday

What To Wear: Black Friday

We’re almost to my favorite holiday… Black Friday!  (I kid, I kid) but I do love a good shopping day trip especially when there are mega sales and festive holiday spirit galore!  Don’t let the day get cut short by not wearing the right things.  Here are few tips for dressing for Black Friday.

1. Start With The Right Shoes

Wear A Walkable Shoe

Wear A Walkable Shoe

If your feet are miserable you are miserable.  It’s that simple.  So wear something walkable, comfortable and warm.  A good riding boot/flat boot is always a good choice or a bootie with a thick low heel like these burgundy ones from mark.

Hmm what to buy this black Friday!?

2.  Dress in Layers

Layer Up A Cami, Sweater, Jacket, Scarf

Layer Up A Cami, Sweater, Jacket, Scarf

You’re going to go from cold to warm to hot so dress in layers that you can easily strip off.  I like wearing a open front cardi sweater because for me it’s the perfect not to hot not to cold layer.  AND when you’re shopping especially on a busy day like black friday you’re not going to wait in line for fitting rooms.  This way you can easily take it off and try on tops/sweaters/jackets even if you’re just getting an idea of how something runs as you gift hunt.

3.  Bring The Right Jacket

Standing out in the lines (if you do such a thing) can get cold or start to rain/snow so a longer jacket with a hood is a good bet.  Double bonus if it has a lot of pockets so you can stash things like change and your phone quickly.

4.  Go Hands Free

Wear a cross body bag so you’re not bogged down by a big satchel.  This will help keep you hands free for touching the merchandise and being an efficient shopper!

5.  Bring a scarf and hair tie.

A scarf will just be that added warmth when you’re outside or when you’re just a bit to hot for your jacket.  I know this seems super random but nothing is worse when you’re hairs all in your face when you’re fighting the shoppers and weather!   These two accessories are your must haves.

What To Wear: Thanksgiving Day

What To Wear: Thanksgiving Day

What To Wear: Thanksgiving Day

Turkey for me.  Turkey for you.  I like to eat my turkey in a big brown shoe… or a chic Thanksgiving Day look.  We all know I’m a sucker for a holiday and a good holiday movie.  Did you notice in the movies, how everyone is always so sharply chic when they show up for family holiday dinners!?  And I always love their looks, so here’s my take on a chic Thanksgiving Day look, that’s still comfortable and fall friendly!

Chic Black and Fall Accessories

Chic Black and Fall Accessories

When in doubt, wear black.  Black always looks classy and chic.  Start with a basic fine gauge crew neck black sweater (Express).  I paired mine with a comfortable pencil skirt (Express), trick is to find one that’s not too tight or too high waisted.  I like pencil skirts because they’re slimming and you don’t have to fight with the hemline while sitting.  HOWEVER you could achieve the same look with black pants, skinnies, jeans or leggings.  The key is in the fall accessories.

Basic Fall Must Have: Plaid Blanket Scarf

Basic Fall Must Have: Plaid Blanket Scarf

Adding this plaid blanket scarf (Target) over my all black look bumps up the fall factor.  Plus it’s extremely practical to ward of the cold and snuggle up.  I just draped mine over my shoulders for a chic shawl look and to showcase this stunning mark. Second Nature Necklace.  Every holiday look needs some major statement sparkle.  The branch like detail on this statement necklace is perfect for the fall holiday but will look just as stunning over my holiday red come christmas.  If you get one sparkle piece this holiday season for yourself let it be this one!

Fall Accessories To Up The Game

Rounding out the accessories are a skinny metallic belt, a really strong black pump (coming soon to my eBoutique taking pre-orders) and a lady like faux croc bag in fall friendly green. (mark. contact if interested).

Fall Friendly For Thanksgiving

Fall Friendly For Thanksgiving

I tend to lean a little more “dinner party” for Thanksgiving but if yours is more casual just switch out the skirt for some more casual bottoms.  A black pump looks good casual or dressed up and fall accessories up the game.  A little chic goes a long way!

Friendsgiving – Thanksgiving Appetizers

Let’s be honest, he best part of Thanksgiving, or in my case, Friendsgiving this year, is those hours before you eat when things are cooking and you’re snacking on delicious appetizers and socializing!  A personal favorite is dips!  Who doesn’t like a good dip!?!  The main staple from my family is a good warm, cheesy artichoke dip!  It’s perfect for the fall and Thanksgiving, plus it’s super easy!

eat, drink and give thanks

eat, drink and give thanks

Artichoke Dip

  • 1 pkg (8oz) Philadelphia cream cheese softened
  • 1 can (14 oz) Artichoke hears, drained and chopped
  • ½ cup mayo
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove garlic minced

Mix all, spoon in pie plate bake 350 for 25 min.

**If you’d like add in some jalapeno’s for some extra kick, or bacon for some savory salty goodness.  Serve it with some fresh french bread or baguette.

A good pairing with artichoke dip is some brie with fruit.  I personally like baked brie for fall paired with apples and grapes.  The clean crisp flavor from the fruit balances well with the savory artichoke dip.  I also love a good crispy cracker because sometimes that’s what I like my dip and brie on!

A few more staples from Hessinger family Thanksgivings are the good old spinach dip in a pumpernickel bread bowl, BLT dip served with broccoli, and the forever a favorite french onion dip.  Now besides the BLT, these are 70’s favorites and I’m sure your mom made them too.  They aren’t fancy but sometimes you don’t need to be.  But what we do like to do is try something new!  This year my new recipe is Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, Apple & Gruyere Bites.

Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, Apple & Gruyere Bites
Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1½ granny smith apples, cubed into ½” cubes
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 1½ oz. grated gruyere cheese
  • 2 tbsp. chives, minced
  • ½ tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 package (1 pound) of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheets with silicone baking mats. Set side.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and cook the onions (with 1 tsp. of salt) until they’re golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove and set aside in a large bowl. In the same skillet, sauté mushrooms until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside in the bowl with the onions.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add in the apples with the sugar. Cook until softened, about 10 minutes. Remove from pan and add to the large bowl with onions and mushrooms.
  4. Add the cheese, chives, and thyme to the bowl and stir to combine the mixture well. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. With a pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 2-inch squares and place them on the lined baking sheets. Using a pastry brush, brush beaten egg on the squares.
  6. Using a tablespoon, place filling in the middle of each puff pastry.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through and switching the baking sheet on the top rack to the bottom and the bottom to the top, until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Let the tarts cool a bit before serving, you don’t want people to burn the roofs of their mouths!
And just to recap here are a few more Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving ideas on what to wear, mani ideas, makeup ideas and an easy cranberry sauce recipe.

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

It’s not that I don’t like the canned stuff, it’s that homemade and fresh is so much better!  My mom made this years and years ago as an alternative and we’ve never looked back.  It’s more of a relish than a jelly sauce, but not only will it taste way better, it dresses up your holiday meal like no other!  Plus!  It’s excellent for leftover turkey sandwiches!

What You Need:

1 bag of fresh cranberries
½ cup sugar
1 whole navel orange, cut in quarters, remove any seed if any are there, should not be but sometimes a little one is there
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp dry raspberry Jell-o

How To Make It:

Grind all in processor, blender or chopper

Let sit about 2 hours or longer, to blend flavors.  The Jell-o has to dissolve.  Overnight is really best!

Notes:

You can double this recipe for a large crowd.

You can chop as fine as you want, but I do pretty fine.

You do not have to cook this recipe, usually don’t but I have cooked it before for a little different taste.

I'm Thankful For Tasty Cranberry Sauce!

I’m Thankful For Tasty Cranberry Sauce!

I will most certainly will be making this for Friendsgiving this Saturday.  Plus it’s one of those things that you can do the night before making one less task on the busy day.  Enjoy!  And if you need some more inspiration for the day check out my ideas on what to wear, mani idea, makeup idea and some of my favorite appetizers!
