Dressing Up A T-Shirt Dress

Dressing Up A T-Shirt Dress

One of my favorite styles in life is a T-Shirt Dress. I like the grab and go ease of one that works for pretty much any occasion, especially in Nor Cal.  Which is apparent in all these previous posts I’ve done wearing a t-shirt dress.  When I ordered the Avon Ella Dress I, at the time, had plans of wearing it for Easter, but when it arrived I realized it was a t-shirt dress!  I wanted something a little more formal but in the process I realized you can dress up t-shirt dress for church, work, baby showers, wedding showers, spring flings… you name it spring event… All while being comfy in a loose t-shirt!

Step 1: Shoes!

Step 1: Shoes!

Dressing up a t-shirt dress comes down to three things for me, shoes, accessories and a shaping layer.  Let’s start with the shoes... because let’s always start with the shoes!  In this case a classic nude patent pump from Nine West took my outfit more polished.  You could swap in your favorite classic flats with this one if you’re not a pump gal, or a clean nude heeled sandal for hotter weather.

Step 2: Accessories

Step 2: Accessories

Next up, accessories!  A t-shirt dress is the perfect canvas for all your fun accessories, in this case we want to dress it up so what better than pearls and rhinestones!?  My pearly set is from Avon (which sold out but is coming back in stock this summer!)  A bit on the statement side this pearly necklace really just stands out and turns my OOTD very pretty.

Step 3: Shaping Layer

Step 3: Shaping Layer

Lastly, a shaping layer.  What does that even mean?  It means that usually a t-shirt dress can be kinda shapeless, so, add in something that gives it some structure!  A jacket, a blazer, a cardigan or even a belt or scarf.  We’re looking to dress up a t-shirt dress so some structure does that.  The Avon Ella Dress has these fun ruffled sleeve details so I pulled out this long jacket/blazer with similar ruffled sleeve details in a perfect-for-spring blush color from Calvin Klein.  The pastel colors compliment while the jacket gives it that a polished finish.  Plus I like how the blush tone from the jacket pulls out the blush tone in the necklace.

Fall Styling Tips – Back To School

Fall Styling Tips: Back To School

Fall Styling Tips: Back To School

Regardless if you’re heading back as a student, a parent of a student or as a student of life it’s back to school time!  Each fall the new school year brings about a refresh.  As a student it’s always a clean slate to start with new trends, friends and self.  As a parent of a student it’s a new start on organization, time schedules and socials.  As a student of life, just like the air getting a little crisper it’s a time to crisp up your fashion, organization and functionality!  That’s why Jill from My Sweet Obsessions and I have teamed up once again to bring you a fresh fall styling tips for a going back to school look.

1. Take On A Trend

Taking On The 90's Trend

Taking On The 90’s Trend

The new school year is the best time to try out something trendy because you know after the fist month you’re going to fall back into what’s quick and easy so try the trend now.  90’s is having a major moment but you don’t have to 15 to be trendy.  For my look I kept it age appropriate by sticking to a black and white pallet.  I tied my 90’s plaid shirt (Target) around my marble print t-shirt dress (mark. Soft T Dress, last seen here).  Because nothing about me is grunge in the slightest bit so my look is more Clueless than 90’s grunge.  (you know you’re thinking of that gym scene).

2.  Keep It Functional

Comfort and functionality are back to school must-haves… and a good back pack!  A t-shirt dress is the perfect solution, comfortable, cute and functional.  mark. Soft T Dress is the perfect easy to wear addition for your back to school shopping.  And what’s back to school without a good backpack!?  This mark. Draw To A Close bag is both functional and sleek so it works from high school to work and everywhere in between.  The detachable straps allow you to wear it as a back pack, cross body or over the shoulder so you can maximize your functionality all fall.

3.  Wear Walkable Footwear

Walking to and from school, class, picking up the kids, taking them to practice or just normal life requires a more functional shoe sometimes.  Co-eds sport chucks like it’s no body’s business and they do so for a reason.  Functional, cute and goes with a-plenty.  I personally elected to go with a more fun color like my mint converse which add just the right pop against my black and white.  And doesn’t hurt they match my Tiffany & Co sunglasses!

4.  Layer It Up

Here’s what I hated.  I would sweat like a mo fo walking to class in the hot indian summer days then freeze inside the class room.  Layers solve this problem. I can easily un-tie the plaid shirt and put it on to battle too much AC and chilly mornings/evenings.  Layers are a fall must-have… going back to that functionality thing.

5.  Accessorize Lightly

With all the moving and shaking back to school brings lightweight jewelry just works.  Daintier pieces are not only on trend this season but work with whatever you’re wearing and don’t get in the way.  I’ve been wearing these mark. All Four It bracelet set pretty much on the daily and you can see why.  Easy and goes with everything.  With the crew neck style of this dress try wearing a choker style necklace for an updated version of the 90’s classic.  These mark. Neck and Neck Choker Set are the perfect unique addition to my back to school shopping!

Jill’s Styling Tips:
Start your look with a casual cool top like the mark. Stroke of Luxe Sweatshirt. Casual because it’s a sweatshirt, cool because of the added embellishments. The top is the perfect throw on and go because the embellishments mean no additional accessories needed. Keep your look on trend with a pair of army green skinny pants. Then finish off your look with just a touch of print in a pair of leopard sneakers.   See more of Jill’s look over on her blog…

Last week’s Trending Tuesday was all my #marble inspo, today it’s how I applied it in my life with the mark. Soft T Dress!  Middle of summer means it’s hot and all the new fashion is coming out for pre-fall.  Which means you need something that can beat the heat and look on trend as we transition  in a few months.  A t-shirt dress is that item!  Put a marble print on it and you got something unique and on trend.

For summer wear I like this look pretty minimal, which makes it work appropriate.  I like it all kept in a monochromatic color scheme, black white and bit of metallic.  All I added was a metallic skinny belt for some shape (too bad I didn’t have one in black, white or silver!  Adding that to the wish list…)

Anchored in black, a structured bag and cap toe pumps also make this dress work appropriate for a summer day.  However, you could easily make it weekend ready with black sandals and lighter bag!

This is your no-fuss, hassle free, easy summer wear piece! I love how versatile it is and I can’t wait to wear it in the fall (stay tuned for a fall friendly take on this dress).  For now I’ll just wear with some sharp silver jewelry, clean white mani and a petal pink lip with Avon Ultra Color Indulgence Lipstick in Petal Pink.

Word Of Alicia Review of the mark. Soft T Dress: I’m totally digging the print, obviously!  But what’s also great about this dress is it’s a relaxed fit and a little longer in length so more versatile for more occasions. Originally I was disappointed this wasn’t a cotton t-shirt dress, it’s polyester so it will retain it’s shape as you wear it and therefore a little thicker so no show through, which I like.   I also dig the pattern all the way around the dress. The marble print is really what makes this dress unique!
