Week O’Nautical – Chinoiserie and Wine

Weekend in wine country calls for the classics. Over the weekend we went out to Amador Wine Country for some wine tasting, views, and mellow times with the fam while Mom is out visiting. As a non-drinker I was there for the experience, and my outfit… blue and white vibes with a chinoiserie style printed dress.

For wine tasting I paired it with my go-to denim jacket for the changing temps, my favorite lip butter, and some white sandals. Easy and classic.

I’ve been seeing the chinoiserie trend ramping up not only in home decor but also in fashion, and I’m here for it! I’ve been pinning a ton of inspo so when I saw this easy sundress at Target I thought it was a great way to embrace the trend and be really practical for the summer. A lot falls into this “chinoiserie trend,” it really embraces all toile, chinoiserie, and delft — the key is to keep it in that classic blue and white print.

Toile is a design that originated in France.  The pattern illustrates a scene e.g., a landscape.  Sometimes with people and animals. Toile is French for “canvas” or “linen cloth” and is mainly used on fabrics.

Chinoiserie is similar but with definitive Chinese patterns as you will find on ginger jars. Symbols like fish, Asian architecture and flowers are used.

Delft is a European style from the Netherlands that uses symbols like windmills and clogs. It is white, glazed porcelain with hand painted blue images.  It originates in the 16th century and is an alternative to Chinese porcelain.
