Happy Chinese New Year! (and get a free egg roll!)

Here’s to the year of the sheep/goat! One of these years I want to make a trip to China Town for the festivities.  Until then I’ll just act like the inner 4th grader I am and theme out my day!  This has been a GREAT week for doing such… Valentien’s Day followed by Mardi Gras and now Chinese New Year!

WORD ON WHAT TO WEAR:  Red and gold are the typical colors but also green for wealth in the new year!  It’s also common for folks to wear something new for a fresh new year.  If this was the early 90’s we had way more Chinese influence outfits (remember those tops!) but looking at my closet I don’t really have too much that feels Chinese inspired.  What I wish I had was a cool floral kimono that are super popular right now or a obi belt,  but I do have some red gold and green in a like-new top (old, but only wore it once!).  I paired this floral print satin top (mark.) with my favorite chevron pencil skirt (mark. see it here and here) with long lace cardi (Rodarte for Target) and some black tights (mark.) and of course a red lip (Avon).  You know, some Chinese inspired florals with red and gold accents are just going to have to do for my theme today!

WORD ON WHAT TO DO:  Well since a visit to China Town isn’t an option today and since I’m working like any other normal Thursday, my local parade isn’t really an option either.   Instead I’ll just eat Chinese!  Potstickers are not only a traditional Chinese food but they resemble little gold nuggets for wealth, or at least I’m told.  The great thing with making your own potstickers is you again can fill them with what you have and/or like, pork, shrimp, veggies, chicken… easy!  Just fill, pinch, steam and fry!  They’re actually a lot easier than you’d think to make.  For an easy weeknight dinner check out the recipe on food.com and pair them with a noodle dish!  I’ll personally just sauté some veggies and noodles with soy sauce, a little hot chili oil and garlic.  Or you can go even easier and order some take out!  We all know Chinese takeout is the best kind of take out!  EVEN BETTER Panda Express is giving free egg rolls out today so print or show this coupon on your device!

Wear and Share Wednesday – mark. by Avon Styling Trapeze Blouse

Wear and Share Wednesday Styling Trapeze Blouse

Wear and Share Wednesday Styling Trapeze Blouse

It’s wear and share Wednesday, which means Jackie from Living After Midnight and I take the same piece, wear it two different ways and share it!  For July we selected the mark. Styling Trapeze Blouse ($30).  It’s the perfect versatile summer top, pool blue color, fun cutout neckline and lightweight for hot summer temps.

Total Look with mark. Styling Trapeze Blouse and PUPPIES!

Going graphic, I played off the graphic cutout details of the top by pairing it with a graphic black and white knit pencil skirt.  Remember this skirt from a previous Wear and Share Wednesday Post?  Jackie and I styled this mark. High Contrast Skirt back in February but it seemed more than fitting to bust it out again for a fun, office-friendly-on-a-106-degree-day look!

Going Graphic

Going Graphic

What’s more graphic than black and white? Black and white pumps from Shoedazzle and a black leather bag with a black and white striped silk scarf tied on add to my look.  My bag and scarf are from Brooks Brothers but you can recreate the look with the mark. Handle With Flair Handbag in black.

The cutout trend is definitely having a moment, but its harder to make that trend work-friendly.  The mark. Styling Trapeze Top ($30) perfectly placed their cutouts around the neckline, making this a more versatile way to wear the trend.  To really focus on this detail I went sans-necklace but avec statement earrings (mark. Wow Factor Earrings) and kept my other jewelry summer friendly in shades of blue and gold.  (Avon Signature Boyfriend watch, mark. Nail This Look Ring, Limited bracelet, blue bracelet from the mark. Glimmer and Gleam Bracelet Set, and two bracelets I picked up on my Hawaiian vacation last year).

Wearing my hair up also helps draw attention to the super fun details of the mark. Styling Trapeze Blouse.  Plus, when its over 100 there is no way I’m wearing my hair down… enter in the mega messy bun.  I used the sock bun technique but wore it lower on my head to make it more appropriate.  Quick summer style for a hot summer day.

5 Must Haves To Update Your Wardrobe For Spring

As much as we want to go out and just buy all the new fashion for spring and have a whole new closet, that dream is not even close to reality.  However, with just a few pieces, you can breath new life into a tired closet stuck in the winter doldrums.

Must Have #1:  Chevron Skirt

mark. High Contrast Skirt

mark. High Contrast Skirt

I touched on a this in my last Wear and Share Wednesday post (see here).  Chevron is having  moment right and now and it can go with a boatload of things you already have in your closet.  Wear it casually with a t-shirt and a leather jacket or dress it up with a blouse and blazer.  Or take it super chic like Jackie did and wear a black sweater and long coat for an instantly classic look.  As the weather heats up this skirt will look equally chic with a tank and sandals.  Wear it now with a touch of neon to freshen up your look.

Must Have #2:  Spring Scarf

Avon Playful Patterned Scarf

Avon Playful Patterned Scarf

Old man winter doesn’t want to go away quite yet so we have to silence him with still wearing a scarf.  Instead of wearing your chunky one you’ve been wearing all winter switch it out with one in a lighter fabric and design.  As the days get a little nicer you can wear just a scarf and loose the coat to ward of chilly mornings and nights.  Wear a spring scarf now with a sold top, t-shirt/sweater/blouse to instantly add some spring chic into your wardrobe.  If it gets too warm for it during the day tie it on to your bag and still show your spring style.

Lighten up your purse!  A bag in a classic shape but in a spring color will transition with your winter items into spring.  Updating your most impactful and daily accessory is the easiest way to breath new life into your wardrobe.  I’ve already sung my praises on switching to a white handbag here and here with the mark. Classic Hit Handbag.  Another great option isn the mark. Properly Chic Satchel, with its color blocking and lady like shape you’ll instantly be on trend for spring.

Wear and Share Wednesday – mark. by Avon High Contrast Skirt

Wear And Share Wednesday with mark. High Contrast Skirt

Wear And Share Wednesday with mark. High Contrast Skirt

My nephew once asked me if my work’s dress code was black and white.  Completely confused since he’s very familiar with my software company, I was like, “Uh what?  No, why?” His response. “oh well because you wear it every day”… it was then I realized I have a problem with my love for black and white.  Let’s also add my favorite animal is a Zebra, my wedding colors are black and white, and I’m a sucker for anything houndstooth, b&w striped and/or chevron.  No surprise when mark. released this High Contrast Skirt I HAD TO HAVE IT!  Jackie and I also knew it HAD TO BE a Wear and Share Wednesday item!  Jackie from Living After Midnite and I had no problem proving its versatility with 2 different looks around this killer skirt!  Jackie wore it posh while my look is more laid back, wear it to work or wear it out, the mark. High Contrast Skirt has you covered.

mark. High Contrast Skirt

mark. High Contrast Skirt

The mark. High Contrast skirt is super comfy, mainly because it’s a stretch knit, but its also lined and a perfect length, making it the perfect skirt!  I wanted to keep with comfy vibe so I paired it with a loose tee (old, Express), but here’s where its versatility comes into play.  You could also wear this with a graphic tee to keep it casual, a blouse to dress it up, a sweater when its cold, a tank when its hot, a leather jacket to make it edgey, a blazer to make it work friendly… the list goes on and on!  Who knew a simple chevron skirt could work so many looks!

mark. Classic Hit Handbag and Deco Appeal Ring

mark. Classic Hit Handbag and Deco Appeal Ring

I thought the Deco Jewelry Set ( a past wear and share item), was the perfect match for this look along with the mark. Classic Hit Handbag (also a past wear and share item) and the Studs and Style Belt, Straight Up Sassy Heels (in and out of sale at my eBoutique).  The Deco Crescent necklace, Deco Drop Earrings and Deco Appeal ring adds just the right amount of glimmer against the chevron pattern.  Plus I love the look of them against cobalt as well!  (All available at http://www.youravon.com/aliciahessinger)

Pattern Play

Pattern Play

I think my love for black and white comes from the contrast, its eye candy!  The pattern actually plays as a neutral so you can pair more with it than you think.  I guarantee you already have a handful of things in your wardrobe to wear with this skirt!  The mark. High Contrast Skirt is a wardrobe staple for sure.  For only $36 you can update your spring wardrobe with an  item you can wear year round!

Got $20 In My Pocket… Styling $20 At A Time

You can thank me later for getting that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis song stuck in your head, if it wasn’t already with all their Grammy success last night.  This year “I’m looking for a come up”  haha… but seriously, the song got me thinking, he’s right.  For $20 there’s a lot you can do, and with everything I have to be super budgeted for this year certain things need to fall on the back burner, for example decorating the new house.  Instead of just letting it completely go I’m going to apply $20 bucks and see what I can do!

H&M Chevron Pillow Covers

H&M Chevron Pillow Covers

First mega find, these chevron pillow covers at H&M.  They had them on special for $3.95, but even at the original price of $5.95 they still fit in my $20 budget.  I signed up for their email list providing me with a free ship code so for approximately $9 I got 2 pillow covers.  I already have ugly throw pillows my couch came with so… COME UP!
