What to Wear:  Regardless if you have a date or not you can still wear something to theme out your day even if all you’re doing is going to work.  I personally lean toward red but pinks and purples are also festive!  I love the look above for sultry date night look, the red wrap dress with high low hem works perfectly with a black lace up bootie and statement necklace all from Avon.

I’m loving this girly purple look from mark. for Valentine’s day too!  It would be perfect for a day date, or for tacos!  Paired with fun flats and a mini bag makes if functional while still being romantic.  Also the kind of outfit you could wear to work just to theme out your day 🙂

Week O’Nautical – Julep Sail Away Bombshell Maven Box

Julep Set Sail Collection for May

Julep Set Sail Collection for May

Ok so I was supposed to post this yesterday but the long weekend was way to enjoyable to be on the computer/tablet/etc. I definitely disconnected over Memorial Day weekend and I’m totally ok with it. So here’s my mani Monday post “going up, on a Tuesday!”

May Bombshell Maven Box

May Bombshell Maven Box

For May, Julep released a “Set Sail” collection based around nautical influences.  I HAD to opt in this month and get my monthly maven box in bombshell which included a purple creme with blue undertones (Denise) and a slightly off white creme (Vanna) with a lip crayon in a fuchsia (which I gave to my mom because it looked PERFECT on her).  Even though these shades aren’t your typical nautical red white and blue (which I was this close on getting instead) they still go perfectly with your nautical looks.  For my add on I added these anchor nail decals because as much as I liked my free-hand anchor last year (see here) this was WAY EASIER!  Oh and can we mention it came with salt water taffy from Ocean City MD, how fitting!

Julep Anchor Nail Decals Add-On's

Julep Anchor Nail Decals Add-On’s

I really couldn’t decided on what I wanted to do with this box since I’ve been into just classically painted nails in one color with a great topcoat.  So I decided just to do 2 fingers in Vanna (white) and 3 in Denise (purple) with the anchors on my pointer and middle.

I have to say despite my horrible cuticles this nail look definitely was a favorite as of late.  It got a lot of attention randomly, like the check stand girl complimenting how great they looked and how she thought it was a gel mani.  Goes to prove how fantastic the Julep formula is!

Thumbs up for Julep!

As we are officially unofficially now in summer, and the long Memorial Day weekend is now over, so is my Week O’Nautical here on the blog… until the 4th of July that is.  Until then, let’s paint the town red!  and purple!  and white!  and all the other mani colors of summer!

Spring Styling Tips: Easter

Styling Tips For Easter

Spring Styling Tips For Easter

Spring has sprung!  Regardless if the weather is here or not it’s time to lighten and brighten things up for spring, which is why Jill from My Sweet Obsessions and I have teamed up again to bring you some styling tips for the new season.  First up, dressing for Easter!  I always feel this is the kick off point for spring looks.

Alicia’s Tips for Dressing for Easter:

What To Wear For Easter

What To Wear For Easter

1.  Add in a new dress to the wardrobe.

mark. About Lace Dress

mark. About Lace Dress

Growing up, Easter always meant a new dress, hat and purse, which always made a little girl happy!  As a grown up, I still do the same thing, add in a new spring dress to the wardrobe this time of year.  Here’s my tip, pick a dress that’s something you can use for all those upcoming spring and summer occasions like baby and bridal showers, weddings, brunches, etc…  This way you’ll maximize your wardrobe and be making a smart purchase.  I went with the mark. About Lace Dress.  It has a flirty cut but yet conservative for things like church on Easter.

2.  Brighten things up.

Try Jewel Tones For Easter

Try Jewel Tones For Easter

Come spring we want to lighten and brighten things up.  We’re so over the dark and gloomy outfits (even if the weather still is).  Easter dresses are the perfect piece to embrace spring colors and/or prints, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your spring pastels.  Try a jewel tone, it’s still a bold color but sometimes helps against that winter complexion (cough, cough, my white legs, cough cough), and it will look just as good come summer.

3. Add a unique spring accessory.

Brooks Brothers hat and mark. All Seasons Scarf

Brooks Brothers hat and mark. All Seasons Scarf

There is never a more appropriate time to wear a fun hat then on Easter.  I prefer a wider brimmed hat for this occasion, it’s a little more dressy, and I’m definitely not opposed to details like flowers, ribbons, etc. but this solid blue Panama hat from Brooks Brothers has been my Easter go-to for years (as seen last year).  Invest in one hat that you can use for years to come since it’s not an every day thing.  If hat’s aren’t your thing try a spring scarf.  This mark. All Season’s scarf is the perfect mix of a fun spring print, lightweight material, and oversized shape.  This makes it perfect to wear wrapped as a scarf or open as a shawl for chilly spring breezes.  Or if you’re like me wear both!  Then add some oversized pearls for a modern yet girly finishing touch.

4.  Keep it appropriate.

Lace Back Detailing on mark. About Lace Dress

I love the flirty lace back detailing of this dress, but a sheer back isn’t necessarily appropriate for church.  I added a white cami underneath to still show the detailing but keep it appropriate.  Now if you were going to a brunch with your friends, totally rock the sheer back!  This is why this mark. About Lace Dress is the perfect addition to your spring wardrobe, it has that playful side you can maximize for your other occasions.

5.  Put some spring in your step.

mark. Sassy Stepper Pumps

One of the biggest pet-peeves, and I see it every Easter, are girls in their pretty Easter dresses with rubber flip flops.  Maybe it’s my East coast classic coming out when I live in a West coast world, but when dressing up rubber flip flops are a no no.  Easter is a dressier Sunday regardless of what you’re doing so step up your shoe game.  It doesn’t have to be heels, but it does have to be a little nicer of a shoe (ex: see Jill’s chic flats in her look) .  There are so many good sandals, flats and heels out there that this should be an issue.  I love the mark. Sassy Stepper Pumps because they are SO COMFORTABLE and a shoe that adds miles to your shoe wardrobe.  They can be worn with jeans to work wear to dresses and beyond.  You can see my love for them here, here, here and here, told you I loved them.

Jill’s Styling Tip:  Be ready for Easter church and your Easter picnic by casually styling pretty spring colors.

My Sweet Obsessions Full Easter Look

My Sweet Obsessions Full Easter Look

Create your casual Easter look by pairing a pencil skirt in spring colors with a casual neutral top like the Sheer Brilliance Sweatshirt by mark. The straight line of the pencil skirt and chiffon layer on the sweatshirt will dress up your look for church. Add a pair of flat sandals to show off your pretty spring pedicure and make it easy to run in the grass to hide those Easter Eggs at the picnic. Finish off your look by adding colorful spring jewelry pieces that go with your skirt like the Three Of A Kind Bracelet Set by mark. This look will easily take you from Easter church to your Easter picnic after church.

Bon Fat Tuesday! Mardi Gras Inspo On A Regular Tuesday

Fat Tuesday has always held a special place in my heart, from French class, to nights out, to beads, to crepes or jambalaya I’ve always celebrated this sinful holiday!  Here’s a little inspiration for the day

Word On What To Wear:  Purple, yellow and green!  The Mardi Gras official colors!  Since I’m working like the rest of us on a typical Tuesday I’ll be pairing my green Express Portofino blouse with some black pants and fun accessories, like my satin printed Nolita pumps (Prabal Gurng for Target, last seen here), yellow skinny belt (Express, old) and of course some purple beads with matching ring and bracelet (mark.)!  Finishing it off with a purple and gold makeup look and my headband fit for Mardi Gras!

Word On What To Do:  Make a New Orleans themed meal fit for a king!  May be a little hard to get down to Bourbon Street, but might as well eat like I’m there!  On the menu:  Jambalaya, Corn Bread, Green Salad and King Cake.  And maybe start the night with a hurricane?

For a good Jambalaya recipe I like this one, but it’s one of those dishes you can work with what you have!  Chicken and sausage, shrimp and sausage, pork and sausage, whatever you like!  Because this is “going up, on a Tuesday” go with a simple salad with dark greens for a bit more of southern taste and as for the king cake, pick this one up at a bakery/grocery store for a Tuesday night treat!

Bon Fat Tuesday!

Date Night Outfit – Girly Dress + Leather Jacket

Girly Dress + Leather Jacket = Date Night Outfit

Girly Dress + Leather Jacket = Date Night Outfit

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner time to start planning!  If date night is on your agenda here’s some outfit inspiro:  Girly Dress + Leather Jacket.  The pairing is flirty but not too formal with the casual leather jacket.  This way, us girls get to dress up but still look cool and casual.

mark. About Lace Dress

For my girly dress I’m wearing the mark. About Lace Dress ($42).  Purple is an under appreciated color for Valentine’s day.  It’s in the same family of pinks and reds only a little more dark and a little more royal.  This dress definitely works the girly factor with it’s fit and flare shape, silky fabric and lace detailing.  I love a good lace detailing, esp for a date night look!

Even though this dress is seriously spring it’s still February and cold, so tights and a jacket are a must.  I think opaque black tights and a black leather jacket looks best.  They don’t complicate the look but bring a level of sleekness.  Good thing my favorite mark. Attention To Detail Tights ($18) are still going strong and this old mark. faux leather jacket is seeing some use after getting it at the end of the season last spring (last seen here).

5 Ways To Wear An Infinity Scarf from Day To Night

1 Infinity Scarf Worn 5 Ways

1 Infinity Scarf Worn 5 Ways

Happy first day of fall!  Even though I’m forever a summer child, I’m officially now ok with busting out a scarf (over a tank), lighting a pumpkin candle (like the current favorite Pumpkin Pecan Waffles from B&BW) and stepping into some booties (preferably peep-toed).  Fall adds a layer of cozy to your life as the days get shorter and cooler.  The best way to combat that is with a scarf.  I’m currently LOVING the mark. All Around Style Scarf ($18 on sale for only $10 with a qualifying purchase at http://www.youravon.com/aliciahessinger).  It’s the perfect balance of fun and fall, and super versatile for changing weather and functions.  Here are 5 different ways to style your infinity scarf using the mark. All Around Style Scarf.

1.  SHRUG

Infinity Scarf As A Shrug

Infinity Scarf As A Shrug

As you start your day it can be pretty chilly in the mornings so start it off by wearing your infinity scarf as a shrug.  Just open it up so its the full circle the slip it around your shoulders.  Done.

2.  One Shoulder

As the morning starts to warm up switch it from a shrug to a one shoulder cover up.  Wrap it around your neck twice then pull to one side, fluff and tuck as need be.

3.  The OG

Infinity Scarf The OG Way

The OG way (original gangsta for the urban impaired) is my favorite way.  Simple, to the point, keeps the chill off and shows off the full pattern of the scarf.  It’s perfect for the mid day.

4.  Halter Top

Infinity Scarf As A Halter

The day has warmed up and its time to head out to happy hour which means time to step up the outfit!  Take the scarf fully open and let it hang from your neck.  Next twist it once so they sides cross over each other.  Take the open loop and flip it around your head and shoulders and put your arms through the loops created.  Adjust it to your liking.  I personally opened it up more around the chest and tucked the “straps” to keep them slim.

5.  Kimono-Like

Infinity Scarf As a Kimono-like Look

As the night cool creeps in and you start to get a little chilly transition your infinity scarf to almost a reverse shrug for a kimono-like look.  All you do is open it to its full size wide in one giant loop and wrap around your shoulders.  It’s like wrapping yourself in your own scarf blanket!

Transition into Fall With Jewel tones – Amethyst

Why hello official first day of fall!  Though you wouldn’t really guess it since its still hot like a mo fo out… which I’m not complaining about AT ALL!  But that does make transitioning into fall a little difficult since it is still so warm out.  Easiest way to do that is with jewel tones!  They flatter just about everyone and easily mesh with your basics.  So let’s do a little series on transitioning into fall with jewel tones.  First up, Amethyst!

am·e·thyst  (m-thst)

n.

1. A purple or violet form of transparent quartz used as a gemstone.
2. A purple variety of corundum used as a gemstone.
3. A moderate purple to grayish reddish purple.

(source)

I’ve always been a fan of the amethyst gemstone and not just because its my mom’s and bestie’s birthstone but just because its naturally super pretty.  Purple is also a color of royalty so who doesn’t want to be a little more royal!?!

Full On Amethyst

Full On Amethyst

My favorite way to incorporate amethyst… full on!  Go with a solid dress in amethyst.  I personally like this jersey dress from mark. because its light enough for summer heat but the color is so rich!  Its shape is super flattering and makes a great canvas for accessories.  I paired it with fall friendly belts, a statement ring and gold jewelry.  Its great for late summer as well because the all over color still puts your mind in fun summer mode.

Dress:  Very Vintage dress (mark – in and out of sale, contact for more details).  Belts:  In A Cinch Belts ($18 mark. – set of 3 in black snakeskin and orange)  Ring:  Vintage Violet Stretch Ring ($18 mark.)  Necklace:  Power Of Change Necklace ($28 mark. – set of 2)  Nailpolish:  Essie Superbossnova ($8 essie.com)  All these mark. items can be found at my eboutique:  http://ahessinger.mymarkstore.com

If you’re not the full on amethyst type of gal than go for pops of amethyst.  For some fall flavor pair your amethyst with your grey or navy!  Such as an amethyst top with your grey slacks or a navy pencil skirt.  Or if you’re more daring it looks exceptional with yellow or teal, and even more daring put it with pink!  If you just want a pop of amethyst then I highly recommend the Vintage Violet Stretch ring mentioned above with your favorite purple shade of nail polish!  Plus vintage design will go beautifully with the art deco trend you’ll be seeing all fall and winter!

Nail Trend: Mixed Media Nails

Alicia 10 years ago, heck!  even 5 years ago would NEVER wear different nail colors on different nails!  Jigga what!!!  Def would of considered it tacky and gaudy…esp on my long nails.  Let alone multiple colors, patterns, textures, etc…  Let’s just say times, they are a changing because this girl now feels boring with a regular old mani.  I’ve been rocking the accent nail pretty heavily for the past year now and since my nail-spiration pinterest I’ve been inspired to create mani-pieces (mani + masterpieces).  And I have to say, these are way more fun!

For the mixed media nail trend you coordinate mixing color, texture and prints.  Basically, the options are endless!  Play around with which fingers get which color/texture/print but the one rule is more than one nail has to be different.  (if its only one nail, then its an accent nail!)

Mixed Media Nails... Coral, Graphite Glitter and Houndstooth

Mixed Media Nails… Coral, Graphite Glitter and Houndstooth

This was my first attempt, and let me say, at first I didn’t like it.  I thought I looked weird, like I forgot to take off some old polish or was testing out new polish on only a few fingers…  However after a few days I loved it!  So fun, and everytime I looked down at my hands I smiled.  And really, that’s the real reason I paint my nails, because it makes me happy!

For this mixed media mani I used Essie Camera from their Spring 2012 collection on my thumb, pointer and pinky.  For the graphite opaque glitter I used a favorite from China Glaze’s holiday 2011 collection Tinsel Town.  (warning:  as beautiful as it is, this shade chips off like a mo fo).  Finally for my favorite nail, the houndstooth nail!  I used a black base of Maybelline Onyx Rush stamped with konad plate M63 and white Konad polish, all finished off with Essie’s Good To Go Topcoat.  Of course that ring is mark.  I love turquoise and coral together and this was no exception!  You can get the Pretty Stellar ring for yourself at me e.boutique at http://ahessinger.mymarkstore.com

My most recent attempt got compliments galore!  I used my newest additions to my nail collection including my July Julep maven box.  I decided to break down and get a 2nd box because July’s box included a FREE bottle of America and red white and blue glitter with silver stars.  Ummm YES!  Had to have that!  So I got my bombshell selection including the free America glitter plus a pearly white and purple glitter.  To learn more about getting your own Julep maven box click here!

Mixed Media Mani: White, Purple, Glitter & Metallics!

Mixed Media Mani: White, Purple, Glitter & Metallics!

The other newest addition to my collection is the newly released Essie Summer Metallics in Nothing Else Metals a metallic lilac used on my pointer and middle!  Which I love love love!  I also picked up Penny Talk, a rose gold but that’s a later post :).  For this mani I used Julep’s Kate on my thumb, ring and pinky with Julep’s Chelsea as a gradient on my ring.  I really loved how this mani stood out but wasn’t loud.  And look how chic it looks with black and white and my new favorite ring pairings!  The chevron rings are a set of 3 currently at Target for $7.99 and that KILLER mega black cocktail ring is once again of course mark!  The Black Facet Ring has been my go to lately with the old hollywood flare in the big black stone but keeping it modern with the shinny silver, plus its large and in charge but super wearable.  Get it now for $16 at http://ahessinger.mymarkstore.com

Are you daring enough to go out of the lines and rock a mixed media mani????
