Week O’Nautical: Seersucker

Week O'Nautical - Seersucker

Week O’Nautical – Seersucker

This is a late post because long weekends tend to be for RR and not blog posts.  And then short work weeks tend to be for catching up not blog posts.  Either way, Labor Day marks my California-versary so I feel I need to mention it each year!  I feel this outfit kinda represents a lot about it.

Brooks Brothers Seersucker Skirt

Brooks Brothers Seersucker Skirt

My seersucker skirt is from Brooks Brothers that I bought while I was moonlighting there.  It’s extremely east coast, classic and preppy, which represents that part of me.  I got it on mega deal because I worked at the Brooks Brothers Outlet and this was a retail piece, so that represents the champaign taste on a beer budget part of me.  Which is why I was moonlighting to begin with, fresh out of college and moved across the country, I needed more $$. Lucky for me a lot of opportunity came from that Brooks Brothers gig, including my now husband.  The skirt was too big for me when I bought it and at the time too long, I always planned to have it hemmed.  Flash forward to now when I’ve gained some weight and learned that I actually like these longer pencil skirts on me, that too represents how I’ve grown here in CA.

East Coat meets West Coast

East Coat meets West Coast

Wearing it today on LDW feels a little full circle.  I paired it with another clearance find from Express, this one shoulder eyelet top.  CA style is much more relaxed so I can wear something that bares my shoulder to work and a Brooks Brothers skirt.  So this top represents my CA side.  I also went back to my favorite ivy covered dumpster at my old office building to take these pictures which absolutely was a huge part of my CA life.

Beautiful Ivy Dumpster Backdrop

Additionally I’m wearing a few of my favorite Avon accessories, my ring, scarf, earring and fav red lipid Coral Fever (see here), which all represent another big part of my CA life and all the opportunities it brought.  Like not having to work retail hours but having a 2nd job for that champaign taste!

I may not be where I thought I’d be when I first moved here, but its been a ride for sure… and we’ll see where I go from here!

Where are we headed!?

What Is a Boot Skirt and Why You Need One

What is a boot skirt and why do you need one?

What is a boot skirt and why do you need one?

What is a boot skirt?  Basically a skirt you wear with boots, if that wasn’t obvious.  But let me tell you why you need one.  They typically are more A-line so that means more flattering.  They usually are of a thicker material like wool blends, stiff cotton, etc, which means perfect for the fall and winter.  You usually have two options, shorter and midi.  Both are cut at a length that shows off the boots but also works with proportions.  A shorter skirt will be cut a few inches above the knee but not a mini, and is the most versatile with what boots work with it.  I found the perfect boot skirt with the mark. Peek of Pleats Skirt.

Perfect Boot Skirt For Fall

Perfect Boot Skirt For Fall

The mark. Peek of Pleats skirt is the perfect shorter version.  It has that flattering a-line shape in a nice wool blend.  What makes this one stand out is its peek of chiffon pleats and wrap detailing.  Pleats are a huge trend for fall and the wrap draws the eye in making it even more flattering.

You can wear a boot skirt with everything from blouses to sweaters.  I paired this black mark. Peek of Pleats skirt with a striped ruffle sleeve sweater from White House Black Market.  I tucked it in but you could easily wear it untucked as well.

Pair it with a ruffle sleeve sweater!

What’s a boot skirt with out a killer pair of boots!  This season mod, white and ankle cut boots are huge trends which I accomplished with this pair from Shoedazzle.  However boot skirts are also designed to wear with tall boots, so bust out your favorite pair to wear with this skirt.

Fall is officially here weather I like it or not, or weather the weather suggests it or not.  One thing is for sure, its time for fall dresses!  If its still hot, or gets warm in the afternoons, a fall dress is the perfect solution.  Linda and I have 2 fall dress options we’re loving for fall…

Avon Zip-Back Double Layer Dress

Avon Zip-Back Double Layer Dress – and Lexi pondering…

An easy fitting navy dress is never a bad idea.  This Avon Zip-Back Double Layer Dress is one of those throw and go options.  The keyhole neckline means you don’t need a necklace and the exposed zipper and split back add just enough style to stand out.  I like this dress for fall because it’s navy, which is a great transition shade, and it’s super easy to wear, and will go with warm weather sandals, to booties, to cold weather boots!

Also Wearing:  Earrnings, Bracelet:  Avon Lavena Collections; Shoes:  Shoedazzle, Bag:  Brooks Brothers (but for a similar look try the Avon Saffiano Leather Dome Bag)

Linda’s Fall Dress:  Avon Open Shoulder Mock-Neck Dress $29.99

Trending Tuesday – Week O’Nautical #wishlist

If the world of alicia was the internet, Week O’Nautical #wishlist would be trending.  It’s the week before Memorial Day so I celebrate my own Week O’Nautical.  If you’re not familiar with my obsession to theme out my day to day, check out my past Week O’Nautical posts here.  Since last year I haven’t really added any nautical inspired pieces to my wardrobe, sad I know!  So here’s some nautical inspired pieces I’m currently crushing on for my Week O’Nautical #wishlist:

1.  Navy and White Nautical Stripped Shorts

Nautical Shorts

Old Navy Printed Chino Pixi Shorts ($24.95)

Nothing is more versatile than a pair of striped chino shorts.  You can dress them up or down for a BBQ to a night out.  I think these are the ultimate on my #wishlist for my Week O’Nautical looks this year and at a great price!

2.  Nautical Portofino

Express Anchor Print Portofino ($44.90)

Express Anchor Print Portofino ($44.90)

My obsession over Express portofino shirts is kinda unhealthy but they’re THE PERFECT SHIRT!  So when I saw they came out with this in red, sleeveless and in an anchor print it immediately made the #wishlist.

3.  Nautical Striped Rope Wedges

Express Espadrille Wedge Sandals

Express Espadrille Wedge Sandals

I realized I’m really lacking a great nautical inspired wedge.  The rope/espadrille detailing on a striped canvas shoe would be perfect!  Too bad these only come in 6 and higher (darn size 5 feet!)

4.  White Statement Necklace

mark. So White Now Necklace

mark. So White Now Necklace ($38)

Here’s that darn white necklace again, it’s popping up on all my wish lists!  Maybe I should just break down and get it haha.  (see here).  This would look great over a navy or red outfit for my Week O’Nautical looks!

5. Navy Blazer

Brooks Brothers Cotton Knit Blazer ($298)

Brooks Brothers Cotton Knit Blazer ($298)

This whole look actually!  I realized my blazer collection is black black and more black.  I kick myself on the daily for never getting a classic Brooks Brothers navy blazer when I moonlighted there (at employee discount!).

All week I’ll be counting down to Memorial Day with my take on red white and blue and nautical influence.  Be sure to check back and see what I can come up with this year!  Until then check out the history of my Week O’Nautical.

Spring Styling Tips: Easter

Styling Tips For Easter

Spring Styling Tips For Easter

Spring has sprung!  Regardless if the weather is here or not it’s time to lighten and brighten things up for spring, which is why Jill from My Sweet Obsessions and I have teamed up again to bring you some styling tips for the new season.  First up, dressing for Easter!  I always feel this is the kick off point for spring looks.

Alicia’s Tips for Dressing for Easter:

What To Wear For Easter

What To Wear For Easter

1.  Add in a new dress to the wardrobe.

mark. About Lace Dress

mark. About Lace Dress

Growing up, Easter always meant a new dress, hat and purse, which always made a little girl happy!  As a grown up, I still do the same thing, add in a new spring dress to the wardrobe this time of year.  Here’s my tip, pick a dress that’s something you can use for all those upcoming spring and summer occasions like baby and bridal showers, weddings, brunches, etc…  This way you’ll maximize your wardrobe and be making a smart purchase.  I went with the mark. About Lace Dress.  It has a flirty cut but yet conservative for things like church on Easter.

Styling Tip: Add a new spring dress to the wardrobe that you can get good use out of all season long!

2.  Brighten things up.

Try Jewel Tones For Easter

Try Jewel Tones For Easter

Come spring we want to lighten and brighten things up.  We’re so over the dark and gloomy outfits (even if the weather still is).  Easter dresses are the perfect piece to embrace spring colors and/or prints, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your spring pastels.  Try a jewel tone, it’s still a bold color but sometimes helps against that winter complexion (cough, cough, my white legs, cough cough), and it will look just as good come summer.

3. Add a unique spring accessory.

Brooks Brothers hat and mark. All Seasons Scarf

Brooks Brothers hat and mark. All Seasons Scarf

There is never a more appropriate time to wear a fun hat then on Easter.  I prefer a wider brimmed hat for this occasion, it’s a little more dressy, and I’m definitely not opposed to details like flowers, ribbons, etc. but this solid blue Panama hat from Brooks Brothers has been my Easter go-to for years (as seen last year).  Invest in one hat that you can use for years to come since it’s not an every day thing.  If hat’s aren’t your thing try a spring scarf.  This mark. All Season’s scarf is the perfect mix of a fun spring print, lightweight material, and oversized shape.  This makes it perfect to wear wrapped as a scarf or open as a shawl for chilly spring breezes.  Or if you’re like me wear both!  Then add some oversized pearls for a modern yet girly finishing touch.

4.  Keep it appropriate.

Lace Back Detailing on mark. About Lace Dress

I love the flirty lace back detailing of this dress, but a sheer back isn’t necessarily appropriate for church.  I added a white cami underneath to still show the detailing but keep it appropriate.  Now if you were going to a brunch with your friends, totally rock the sheer back!  This is why this mark. About Lace Dress is the perfect addition to your spring wardrobe, it has that playful side you can maximize for your other occasions.

5.  Put some spring in your step.

mark. Sassy Stepper Pumps

One of the biggest pet-peeves, and I see it every Easter, are girls in their pretty Easter dresses with rubber flip flops.  Maybe it’s my East coast classic coming out when I live in a West coast world, but when dressing up rubber flip flops are a no no.  Easter is a dressier Sunday regardless of what you’re doing so step up your shoe game.  It doesn’t have to be heels, but it does have to be a little nicer of a shoe (ex: see Jill’s chic flats in her look) .  There are so many good sandals, flats and heels out there that this should be an issue.  I love the mark. Sassy Stepper Pumps because they are SO COMFORTABLE and a shoe that adds miles to your shoe wardrobe.  They can be worn with jeans to work wear to dresses and beyond.  You can see my love for them here, here, here and here, told you I loved them.

Jill’s Styling Tip:  Be ready for Easter church and your Easter picnic by casually styling pretty spring colors.

My Sweet Obsessions Full Easter Look

My Sweet Obsessions Full Easter Look

Create your casual Easter look by pairing a pencil skirt in spring colors with a casual neutral top like the Sheer Brilliance Sweatshirt by mark. The straight line of the pencil skirt and chiffon layer on the sweatshirt will dress up your look for church. Add a pair of flat sandals to show off your pretty spring pedicure and make it easy to run in the grass to hide those Easter Eggs at the picnic. Finish off your look by adding colorful spring jewelry pieces that go with your skirt like the Three Of A Kind Bracelet Set by mark. This look will easily take you from Easter church to your Easter picnic after church.

Wear and Share Wednesday Styling Trapeze Blouse

It’s wear and share Wednesday, which means Jackie from Living After Midnight and I take the same piece, wear it two different ways and share it!  For July we selected the mark. Styling Trapeze Blouse ($30).  It’s the perfect versatile summer top, pool blue color, fun cutout neckline and lightweight for hot summer temps.

Going graphic, I played off the graphic cutout details of the top by pairing it with a graphic black and white knit pencil skirt.  Remember this skirt from a previous Wear and Share Wednesday Post?  Jackie and I styled this mark. High Contrast Skirt back in February but it seemed more than fitting to bust it out again for a fun, office-friendly-on-a-106-degree-day look!

Going Graphic

Going Graphic

What’s more graphic than black and white? Black and white pumps from Shoedazzle and a black leather bag with a black and white striped silk scarf tied on add to my look.  My bag and scarf are from Brooks Brothers but you can recreate the look with the mark. Handle With Flair Handbag in black.

The cutout trend is definitely having a moment, but its harder to make that trend work-friendly.  The mark. Styling Trapeze Top ($30) perfectly placed their cutouts around the neckline, making this a more versatile way to wear the trend.  To really focus on this detail I went sans-necklace but avec statement earrings (mark. Wow Factor Earrings) and kept my other jewelry summer friendly in shades of blue and gold.  (Avon Signature Boyfriend watch, mark. Nail This Look Ring, Limited bracelet, blue bracelet from the mark. Glimmer and Gleam Bracelet Set, and two bracelets I picked up on my Hawaiian vacation last year).

Wearing my hair up also helps draw attention to the super fun details of the mark. Styling Trapeze Blouse.  Plus, when its over 100 there is no way I’m wearing my hair down… enter in the mega messy bun.  I used the sock bun technique but wore it lower on my head to make it more appropriate.  Quick summer style for a hot summer day.

Orange Is The New Black

Summer Orange Maxi With Flats and Gold Accents

Summer Orange Maxi With Flats and Gold Accents

Have you been bing watching Orange Is The New Black?  The second season was released just in time for summer vacation bing watching… can you say staycation!?  I may not be wearing an orange jumpsuit but this orange maxi is the next best thing!  Orange is having a major moment in the world of Alicia (as seen here).  I’ve replaced my go-to black pieces with this bright cheery color.  Its the perfect bright summer color that looks great on almost anyone and look really good with a tan and gold accents!  Instead of a standard black maxi go with an orange maxi!  I picked up this dress for $5… yes $5! at H&M.  It was a little shapeless but I knew it would be perfect for accessorizing.  It also is short enough to wear with flats!  When you’re only 5′ that’s a big deal because sometimes a maxi and flats is just a functional, must-have type of outfit.

20140619_124017

Brooks Brothers Orange and Linen Flats

Brooks Brothers Orange and Linen Flats

I had these linen and orange leather trimmed flats from Brooks Brothers that really added a little luxe to an otherwise thrifty maxi.  To also luxe up the look shiny gold sunglasses, jewelry and belt!  The gilded accents really play off the warm coloring of orange and make this look chic for summer.

Coach Sunglasses With Gold Stems

Coach Sunglasses With Gold Stems

The straight lines of this dress really does not help a curvy figure.  One of the biggest appeals of maxi dresses are their lengthening and slimming effect.  A straight cut like this one on a curvy figure does the opposite by tenting out and making me appear bigger than I am.  That’s when a belt becomes your best friend!  Just adding a slim metallic wrap belt like this mark. Cross Over Belt completely transforms the look and makes it way more flattering.  Tie it all together with a gold cuff from Buckle and my Avon Signature Watch and I’ve got a easy summer look thats both functional and flattering.

Orange and Gold for Summer

Orange and Gold for Summer

An easy summer outfit needs easy summer makeup.   Let the freckles shine through by only adding a touch of concealer, bronzer on cheeks (mark. Island Beauty Pallet, reviewed here.) and a swipe of metallic blue liquid liner (mark. On The Edge Eyeliner in Blue Chrome) with a killer voluminous mascara (Avon Aero Volume Mascara).  A little mark. All Butter Now Lip Butter on my lips and I’m good to go!  You can get the look at my eBoutique:  http://www.youravon.com/aliciahessinger

Week O’Nautical – Wear To Work

Zoey Loves Week O'Nautical

Zoey Loves Week O’Nautical

As much as I would love to be on a yacht today, I have to be at work… in my cube… doing all things completely not associated with sailing the seas and basking in the sun.  Since I can’t be yachting, I might as well wear something nautical to work.  Lucky for me nautical trends work just as well for work as they do for play!  I was inspired by this stunning image from pinterest of this perfect yacht-tastic outfit:

Nautical Inspiration

Nautical Inspiration

That would be highly inappropriate for work, however I can take those same elements and put them into a work friendly outfit!  Sailor pants… check!  White button down… check!  Brown leather accessories… check!  Bronzy eye makeup and pink lip… check!

Taking Nautical To Work

Taking Nautical To Work

For my take I took these navy ankle pants from mark. and paired them with a Brooks Brothers Non-Iron and then added on some fun nautical jewelry and neutral peep-toe pumps, also from Brooks Brothers.  With ankle pants a good sized heel will help create longer lines and avoid the stumpy frumpy look some ankle pants can create.  For work, when wearing a tall heel stick to a classic shape and material like these brown leather peep-toes.  Brooks Brothers has GREAT shoe options for work that are extremely comfortable and well made.

Nautical Accessories For Work Are All Play

Chain link bracelet and gold knot bracelet (as part of the Glimmer And Gleam Bracelet Set) and pyramid studs are from mark. while the navy rope necklace is a past find from Target.  My pink lip is Make It Rich Lip Crayon in Punch (now 40% off for a limited time at the eBoutique!)

What To Wear To Work - Nautical Edition

What To Wear To Work – Nautical Edition

I expressed my love for crisp white paired with contrasting navy as my favorite nautical pairing (see here) so it only makes sense that I continue that trend for work.  What makes this outfit work so well for the office are the clean lines and the professionalism from a good white button down shirt.  Even just wearing it on a random work day I felt more put together and professional, like I was able to conquer the day (and i did!  i even made my bed!)!  Every closet, regardless of your occupation, should contain a good white button down shirt.  The best on the market is the Brooks Brother Non-Iron.

DSC_0739

Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Dress Shirt In Tailored Fit

Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Dress Shirt In Tailored Fit

Just a little testimonial.  I haven’t worn this shirt in a good 6 months to a year and this is how I pulled it out.  Look how crisp it is, with ZERO ironing straight out of the dryer and hung (crammed) in the closet.  Not only is it a true non-iron, the material is fantastic, stitching is fantastic and fit (for even a large bust) is fantastic.  You get what you pay for with this one.  When you need to look the part, this is the shirt you need to pull out and wear.  Every working girl’s wardrobe should contain at least one investment in a Brooks Brothers Non-Iron.  Your promotion will thank me later.

mark. Island Elegance Maxi for Wear and Share Wed

Bon Voyage!  Jackie from Living After Midnite and I are taking an instant vacation to Saint Barts for wear and share Wednesday!  It may be just a normal Wednesday and we might just be doing our normal Wednesday activities but when you slip into this hi-low dress from the mark. Instant Vacation Saint Barts capsule collection you’re instantly transported to vaca mode on the French island!  We both took the mark. Island Elegance Maxi Dress ($44) and styled it two ways!

mark. Island Elegance Maxi Dress

The mark. Island Elegance Maxi dress has plenty of interest with its chain detail neckline and beachy pattern in swirls of ocean blues, greens and sandy golds.  So it really comes down to how you accessorize it.  I wore this look on Easter so I wanted to dress it up pretty and lady like and fit for spring.  (yes, yes I know, I was supposed to wear the Royal Pretty Dress but this came the Friday before and I just HAD TO!)

Like I said the pattern on this dress is pretty much all you need but I created an arm party that pulled in the those same blues and sandy golds with the mark. Glimmer and Gleam Bracelet Set ($26) also from the Saint Barts capsule collection and Avon Signature Watch ($69.99).  I loved how this dress just flows and blows in the breeze and with my bangle jangle I definitely felt pretty and lady like.

What’s an Easter look without a hat!?!  My Brooks Brothers hat in royal blue was the perfect match to this dress.  I love how Jackie and I both accented in dazzling blue (the color of spring as shown here here and here!)  With a big hat like this one, usually your earrings get lost, but not these extra large gold hoops with chain detail in the mark. Hang With Me Earrings ($20).  They were the perfect pair to complete the look.  I finished off my look with white lace pumps from Shoedazzle (old) and a beauty look created with the Island Eyes Shadow Pallet ($16) and Island Beauty Face Compact ($16) — which I reviewed in my last post!

What I love about this dress is it is perfectly appropriate for somewhere like church on Easter, to brunching with the girls, to a summer night out to a beach cover up or summer vacation and as well as time spent in Saint Barts!  Its one of those wear anywhere dresses that will get you nothing but compliments!  You can shop the entire mark.
