Hairtastic: The Half Up Messy Bun

The Half Up Messy Bun

The Half Up Messy Bun

The half up messy bun is having a moment.  I’m totally on board with this hairstyle for a few reasons.

1.  It’s super easy.  Who doesn’t like easy.

2.  It’s super quick.  I’m always late.  ALWAYS.  So having a hairstyle in my arsenal that’s quick and looks good is a must have.

3.  It keeps your hair out of your face while still looking “done.”

4.  It works with semi-wet hair.  Again back to this whole late thing, I don’t have time to blow dry so I need some wet hair looks.

5.  It was my go-to hair style in High School when I was running late.  Obiv it looks way better now when I do it but who doesn’t like resurfacing old trends haha.

Here’s how I do it: Air dry my hair for a little bit, basically until my bangs are dry.  Next I prep the hair with mark. Give It To Me Straight Super Smoothing Lotion.  Then I separate about half my hair starting at about half inch above my ears.  With this gathered hair I either twist into a bun or just create a messy ponytail bun, both secured with an elastic.  By messy ponytail bun I mean I just go through the motions of doing a ponytail only I don’t pull the ends out.  There’s no wrong way to do this, just create a non-perfect half up look.  I then will round brush and blow-dry my bottom half of hair, finger comb/style my bangs and leave some face framing layers loose.  Spray it all with a hair spray (John Frieda Frizz Ease Aerosol is my hair spray of choice.)  Done!

Quick and Easy – Party Hair and Nails

Holiday season is in full swing!  Which means holiday parties and get togethers or even just extra fun nights out!  Sometimes, however, a girl just doesn’t have enough time to get full on glam.  Luckily this season I found some super quick and super easy products!

Quick Hair:

Quick and Easy Updo With Good Hair Day Clip

Quick and Easy Updo With Good Hair Day Clip

Pulling your hair up already just seems like you just spent and hr doing it!  This low messy bun works with a plethora of looks and really showcases your earrings!  Add the mark. Good Hair Day Clip ($12) and you’re instantly steps above the girl in the perfect chignon, all in a matter of seconds!  I literally did this in under a minute.  To recreate:

1.  Brush hair back and gather in a low pony at the nape of the neck secure with elastic.

2.  Above the elastic loosen and make a hole by splitting it in half.

3.  Take the the pony from below the elastic and go above the elastic and loop through the hole created.  (Basically these 3 steps just outlined topsy tail if you’re cool you’ll remember this from back in the day).

4.  Take a second elastic and create a messy bun with the remainder of the pony, I just personally wrap and twist like i was putting it in like a ponytail only not fully pulling the hair all the way through but do it how it works for you!

5.  Add Good Hair Day Clip at the top of the topsy tail on either side and bam! you’ve got an updo in less than a minute!

Quick Nails:

Essie Beyond Cozy and Just Your Luxe Ring

Essie Beyond Cozy and Just Your Luxe Ring

Since I got my Essie Winter 2012 mini cube (see here) I’ve been obsessing over this Beyond Cozy shade.  Its a silver and blond gold full opaque glitter, perfect for any night out!  Best thing about this shade… you can do 1 thick coat for full coverage and it dries SUPER QUICK!  How’s that for quick and easy nails!?!  Add a statement cocktail ring like this mark. Just Your Luxe Ring and you’re mani’s making holiday party moves!

Want to take that mani to the next level?  Do a half moon manicure with your favorite shade!

Tape It Off With Hole Reinforcers

Tape It Off With Hole Reinforcers

This technique isn’t anything new or amazing but its super quick and easy!  Tape off the half moon at the base of the nail, I liked mine a little higher so almost half way, so more glitter shows through!  Paint your nails in your color of choice from the top of the reinforcer up.  I picked Essie Bobbing for Baubles, a navy shade that achieved full coverage in one coat over the glitter.  Finish with a fast dry top coat to even out texture and you’re nails are DONE!    Sit for 2 full minutes then let them dry the rest of the way in the car on to your destination… that’s how party nails are done quick and easy haha!

Week O’ Nautical – Tuesday’s Look, Minty Nautical

Week O’Nautical sails on!  (pun intended haha)  Little note of fun, as I started to write this Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Summertime, the ultimate summer anthem,  just started playing on my iTunes.  Coincidence?  I think not… its fate!  And if you know me you know my obsession for Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.  I can relate pretty much anything in life to a Fresh Prince episode!  Aaaaanyways…. here’s Tuesday’s fresh ensemble:

The Necessary Accessories

This is not your typical Nautical look but what’s more sea-worthy than some sea green?  It’s no secret for my mint obsession this spring and these are few of the pieces I actually have to play out that obsession with.  I’m wearing a mint green t-shirt with a black and white stripped bandage skirt, super easy!  The t-shirt I got for $5 at Target, (this one) and my skirt is from Express awhile ago.  But stripped bandage skirts are a dime a dozen so easily re-created.  I love my Express one for the unexpected back detailing with the line down the back.  I’m also glad I got it a size larger so its not skin tight.  I highly recommend adding a black and white stripped skirt to your wardrobe.  I’ve worn mine to death with everything from a t-shirt, to a blazer, to a button down dress shirt to a sequin tank for my Christmas party last year.

For my hair decided to try out some beach waves.  This style I wore a lot in the early 2000’s when I lived in PA and the humidity was ridiculous and NO WAY was I going to blow dry.  Plus the humidity brought out the waves.  Now in super dry Nor Cal there’s no waves in that hair, BUT mark. launched a NEW haircare line and the Curl Commander Curl and Wave Defining Gel  help me achieve effortless beach waves!  All I did was use a decent amount on towel dried hair and scrunched.  I used a little hairspray on my bangs and DONE!  I was really shocked how this gel created some texture in my naturally straight hair AND was soft not crunchy at all!  I’m looking forward to playing more with this look and with addition of Curl to Curl Reactivate and Define Mist.  More hair posts to come!

For the rest of my look I have on some minty fresh baubles from the Banana Republic outlet and mark.  My Borrowed From the Boys watch is a staple.  The ring and earrings are also from mark. which have been in and out of sale!

My makeup look of course is all mark. too!  My mark. of the moment product is the Keep It Going Longwear Shadow and Liner in Naturalist.  It’s a gel formula in a teal and brown duo.  I’ve been sporting by lining half my lid with the teal shade followed by the outer half in the brown with an eyeliner brush.  I then drag the brown shade up into my crease to create definition.  Its WAY easier than it sounds and creates interest with the pop of color perfect for spring and summer.  On my lips is another of my mark. must haves, Lip Click Color Shine in Cupid.  This is not your typical lipstick!  It wears like a balm with some shine and SPF 15!  Added bonus the cap is magnetic so you don’t loose it in your bag o’makeup so no ruined lipstick!  Love this flattering pink shade in Cupid.

So what’s the verdict on day 2?  Nautical enough?  What’s your favorite nautical looks?
