Week O’Nautical: The Nautical Trench Coat

Week O’Nautical: The Nautical Trench Coat

This nautical trench coat is a bit of a unicorn item for me.  With the weather we’ve been having its kind of the perfect piece for a spring layer.  It is functional and seasonal and also classic in style with a classic nautical look in navy and white stripes.

My Unicorn Coat

My Unicorn Coat

Lets go back a few years when Cabi released this beautiful navy and striped trench coat. It was out of my budget and not the most practical purchase for me especially at a higher cost. I live in Nor Cal where coat weather is pretty much only Nov – Feb… and let me tell you I already have a billion coats. So I stalked it.  And stalked it.  And stalked it and wish I had it.  THEN I saw Express release their version, but again at a higher price than I wanted to spend on another coat I don’t need.  I had a great black trench coat from Express that Nicki found me on clearance back during the working at the mall, Elder Beerman days.  Probably like 2001 and that guy lasted me a good 15 years or more.  So when this striped version went on clearance and I was able to get it for pennies on the dollar I swooped it.  That was also in July so it hasn’t even been worn until this spring!  And now, my unicorn coat is home where it belongs, getting its full exposure on Week O’Nautical.

Navy and White Striped Trench Coat

Even living in a climate where coats are super necessary this is still a style that should be a staple.  Come spring we’re all ready to leave all the black and grays of winter behind.  And hey, San Francisco is only a car ride away and I’ll always need a jacket there!

My OOTD is basically this Week O’Nautical look all over again, gold sweater and white jeans.  My sweater is also from Express circa early 2000’s and my jeans are some random brand from Marshalls.  Slides are Calvin Klein from Nordstrom’s Rack… and I’m loving them with white jeans!

You might remember I also wore this trench over my spring dress here, for another look at its versatility.  I found quite a few of this exact jacket on Poshmark and Ebay but I’m also loving this BCBG one and this Rachael Roy one.  I’m hoping I can pack this puppy away soon, but it has been my must have go-to this week!

Trending Tuesday – Week O’Nautical #wishlist

If the world of alicia was the internet, Week O’Nautical #wishlist would be trending.  It’s the week before Memorial Day so I celebrate my own Week O’Nautical.  If you’re not familiar with my obsession to theme out my day to day, check out my past Week O’Nautical posts here.  Since last year I haven’t really added any nautical inspired pieces to my wardrobe, sad I know!  So here’s some nautical inspired pieces I’m currently crushing on for my Week O’Nautical #wishlist:

1.  Navy and White Nautical Stripped Shorts

Nautical Shorts

Old Navy Printed Chino Pixi Shorts ($24.95)

Nothing is more versatile than a pair of striped chino shorts.  You can dress them up or down for a BBQ to a night out.  I think these are the ultimate on my #wishlist for my Week O’Nautical looks this year and at a great price!

2.  Nautical Portofino

Express Anchor Print Portofino ($44.90)

Express Anchor Print Portofino ($44.90)

My obsession over Express portofino shirts is kinda unhealthy but they’re THE PERFECT SHIRT!  So when I saw they came out with this in red, sleeveless and in an anchor print it immediately made the #wishlist.

3.  Nautical Striped Rope Wedges

Express Espadrille Wedge Sandals

Express Espadrille Wedge Sandals

I realized I’m really lacking a great nautical inspired wedge.  The rope/espadrille detailing on a striped canvas shoe would be perfect!  Too bad these only come in 6 and higher (darn size 5 feet!)

4.  White Statement Necklace

Here’s that darn white necklace again, it’s popping up on all my wish lists!  Maybe I should just break down and get it haha.  (see here).  This would look great over a navy or red outfit for my Week O’Nautical looks!

5. Navy Blazer

Brooks Brothers Cotton Knit Blazer ($298)

Brooks Brothers Cotton Knit Blazer ($298)

This whole look actually!  I realized my blazer collection is black black and more black.  I kick myself on the daily for never getting a classic Brooks Brothers navy blazer when I moonlighted there (at employee discount!).

All week I’ll be counting down to Memorial Day with my take on red white and blue and nautical influence.  Be sure to check back and see what I can come up with this year!  Until then check out the history of my Week O’Nautical.

Week O’ Nautical Day 5 – Navy and White

Now here’s your traditional nautical look for Friday.  The delta breeze is coming through so only like a high of 70 today which got me excited because I thought to myself, “I can wear my white jeans for nautical week!”  This is what gets me excited, I’m easy to please.

Classic Nautical Look

Classic Nautical Look

The top is my week of nautical staple, I wear it every week o’ nautical every year.  This BeBe find from years back has paid for itself with the price per wear index.  My jeans were gifted to be from the best gifter, my mom!  She’s got the Kohl’s connection so when I saw that Rock and Republic came to Kohl’s mom granted the hookup.  I highly reccommend the Rock and Republic line at Kohl’s.  Since Kohl’s bought out the line they’ve done a good job at keeping its original look and feel of the line with a better price point.  These are the Kasandra fit which I like a lot because they slim through the legs down past the knee until they flare out for the bootcut.  I would like them to be a little more low rise but that’s because I’m only 5′ even.  The weight on these is a little thick but not too thick that they’re too hot for spring.  Plus the thickness allows for almost zero show through.

As for the rest of my outfit I switched from the gold I’ve been wearing all week to clean and sleek silver.  I kept it simple with a cuff from Express, a bracelet style watch from Burberry and simple silver band ring I got on vaca to Mexico.  And then there’s my shoes… I’ve been waiting all week to wear these navy cut out pumps with grey and yellow detailing from Shoedazzle.  These shoes suck to walk in, they’re too big even with inserts and barely stay on my feet, but they’re nice and high and match so nicely so when I can, I sacrifice for fashion.  And you know that bag and scarf I showed you in Wednesday’s Boho Nautical look... well I tied that scarf on my bag for a little extra something.  (even the pups liked it!)  I also wore some super star dangling earrings I found in my jewelry box from college.  Didn’t really show up well in my pics, but my star earrings showed up nicely with a messy pony.  I thought they were very USA stars and strips appropriate!

Week O’ Nautical Day 4, Nautical Parisian Stripes

What’s black and white and “red” all over?  A newspaper…. and my outfit hahaha.  You know you chuckled… and also thought a zebra with a sunburn.

Week O' Nautical Day 4 Look

Week O’ Nautical Day 4 Look

Even though it’s getting a little too warm for pants I wanted to wear my red Columnist pants from Express with my black and white tank also from Express.  The Columnist fit of their pants is my favorite!  When they released the red suit last fall I was all over it, except I never got the jacket and didn’t get these pants until like Feb when they went on super clearance and I’m so glad I did.  When in doubt, wear red!  If you’re going for a colorful pant in your wardrobe I would suggest red.  It works year round, looks good on pretty much everyone and will get you noticed in a good way.  Plus it will match so much you already have and works for all your holiday dressing.  Except for St. Patrick’s day.  I don’t recommend wearing it with your green, since everyone will think you’re Christmas-ing it up.  I digress… back to my outfit…  the red pants also kinda look a little Parisian with the black and white striped top which is never a bad thing!

I coordinated my stripped top with my stripped shoes.  Now these shoes are from the Nine West outlet years and years ago and really have seen better days.  I’ve tried to doctor them but if I let you look closely you could see where the dog has got them, the white stripes that don’t necessarily look so white anymore, the mole skin I’ve wrapped them in around the toe to cover the wear and cracking, etc… However they match PERFECTLY and are still some of my favorites.  They were my go to shoe for standing on my feet all day at Brooks Brothers to trade shows to going out comfy heel… these are 24hr shoes!  (I will explain my shoe classification by hrs at a later date).  If these shoes could tell a story they represent a good portion of my life, so I will continue to wear them and maybe take them to the cobbler and see what he can do.

As for the rest of me, those shades are Marc Jacobs and POLARIZED!  I have bad eyes so polarized lenses are a MUST HAVE, actually they are for anyone, skip those $5 shades at the market and get yourself some protective shades.  Then there’s my statement necklace!    I think it looks kind of nautical with all the twisted chains and mixed metals and beads, like a twisted anchor chain with bling.  It’s of course, from mark. they do GREAT statement necklaces.  This one is called the Scene Stealer necklace and has been in and out of sale.  The earrings are the Fireball earrings that match the necklace PERFECTLY.   They will be in next month’s sale at my eBoutique so get them at the KILLER sale price.  I’ve worn mine with everything, they give just that small amount of needed sparkle especially when you’ve got a lot going on elsewhere.  And super light you won’t even notice you  have them on!  I wish you could see my makeup better but lots of sun and a point and shoot camera doesn’t always allow for that.  However, what goes perfectly with all these nautical outfits is the mark. On The Dot Pallet in Neutral.  It has 9 shades you can create a million different looks with and are the most flattering neutral shades I’ve ever come across.  If you get one mark. item in your life it should be this pallet, and it’s only $16!  Take that Naked Pallet!

Cocktail Rings and Watch

Cocktail Rings and Watch

Since I was wearing such a statement making necklace I kept it simple with my favorite silver watch from Burberry and doubled up on the cocktail rings!  The mixed metals and “stones” went well with the mixing going on in my necklace.  The red ring was gifted to me by the FAB miss nicole and I love it!  The 2 balls are also from mark. from last holiday season.  I like how my jewelry all plays together so nicely today, sometimes it just works.

How does day 4’s look hold up?  Too Parisian to be nautical?  Do you have a pair of beater shoes that keep on kicking and you’d like to have brand new once again?

Week O’ Nautical – Tuesday’s Look, Minty Nautical

Week O’Nautical sails on!  (pun intended haha)  Little note of fun, as I started to write this Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Summertime, the ultimate summer anthem,  just started playing on my iTunes.  Coincidence?  I think not… its fate!  And if you know me you know my obsession for Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.  I can relate pretty much anything in life to a Fresh Prince episode!  Aaaaanyways…. here’s Tuesday’s fresh ensemble:

The Necessary Accessories

The Necessary Accessories

This is not your typical Nautical look but what’s more sea-worthy than some sea green?  It’s no secret for my mint obsession this spring and these are few of the pieces I actually have to play out that obsession with.  I’m wearing a mint green t-shirt with a black and white stripped bandage skirt, super easy!  The t-shirt I got for $5 at Target, (this one) and my skirt is from Express awhile ago.  But stripped bandage skirts are a dime a dozen so easily re-created.  I love my Express one for the unexpected back detailing with the line down the back.  I’m also glad I got it a size larger so its not skin tight.  I highly recommend adding a black and white stripped skirt to your wardrobe.  I’ve worn mine to death with everything from a t-shirt, to a blazer, to a button down dress shirt to a sequin tank for my Christmas party last year.

For my hair decided to try out some beach waves.  This style I wore a lot in the early 2000’s when I lived in PA and the humidity was ridiculous and NO WAY was I going to blow dry.  Plus the humidity brought out the waves.  Now in super dry Nor Cal there’s no waves in that hair, BUT mark. launched a NEW haircare line and the Curl Commander Curl and Wave Defining Gel  help me achieve effortless beach waves!  All I did was use a decent amount on towel dried hair and scrunched.  I used a little hairspray on my bangs and DONE!  I was really shocked how this gel created some texture in my naturally straight hair AND was soft not crunchy at all!  I’m looking forward to playing more with this look and with addition of Curl to Curl Reactivate and Define Mist.  More hair posts to come!

For the rest of my look I have on some minty fresh baubles from the Banana Republic outlet and mark.  My Borrowed From the Boys watch is a staple.  The ring and earrings are also from mark. which have been in and out of sale!

My makeup look of course is all mark. too!  My mark. of the moment product is the Keep It Going Longwear Shadow and Liner in Naturalist.  It’s a gel formula in a teal and brown duo.  I’ve been sporting by lining half my lid with the teal shade followed by the outer half in the brown with an eyeliner brush.  I then drag the brown shade up into my crease to create definition.  Its WAY easier than it sounds and creates interest with the pop of color perfect for spring and summer.  On my lips is another of my mark. must haves, Lip Click Color Shine in Cupid.  This is not your typical lipstick!  It wears like a balm with some shine and SPF 15!  Added bonus the cap is magnetic so you don’t loose it in your bag o’makeup so no ruined lipstick!  Love this flattering pink shade in Cupid.

So what’s the verdict on day 2?  Nautical enough?  What’s your favorite nautical looks?
